My Idea of Success And its Impact on Nigeria By Damilare Charles Ogunleye

Success is a phenomenon which has family, both nuclear and extended while its opposite, failure is an orphan. The concept of success is an age-long one. Many people had been described as been successful while others were classified as not that “lucky”. However in a society like ours, the concept of success is somehow different. Many Nigerians are living a psychological-hampered life, thereby ending up unsuccessful. Success in Nigerian conceptual view, has been bastardized that an average Nigerian believes that no one can succeed without treading a questionable path. Success is not a one-time excellent affair, in fact, the ability to maintain the tempo is what success really mean.
Most of the so-called success in this clime is not so in the real sense but our psychological instincts have been dealt a huge blow that it is very impossible to define what we term success. Sometimes, people dwell on their imaginary that their woes were caused by the government or immediate environment. The tools for success are right within us, our inner mind, eyes, and thoughts. Someone with inferior mindset cannot achieve superior feats, there’s no magic or miracle in success. Something must be done to premise such miracle. I know someone who never takes little for his dream. Though, he is academically limited but his scope seems unlimited. The man attempted a political position and got it at first attempt at the expense of more experience colleagues. He joined politic less than a year to that election period and he defeated all those who had been canvassing for the same post for a very long time, starting from the party’s shadow election. I know you will be asking if he was a “mega-rich” man but let me state categorically that he was so rich he couldn’t afford a “14” inch television set in his living room and couldn’t pay a house rent which cost less than thirty thousand Naira then. So how did he get it? It was simple. He was focused and determined. He had a clear vision, goal, target and well-carved-out destination. And he got it because his mind stuck to it. He was persuaded to step down at dawn of the primary election of his party by a strong politician in the state but he insisted on his mission.
But getting a dream is not enough in attaining success. Effort must be geared toward all activities that would lead to its fulfillment. It is evident that two things happen when critical decision is to be taken over a quest. The first is “fear” which is predominantly part of human existence. No matter how successful one is in a stage, to get to the nest level always come with its fear.  The second feeling is “will”. This constitutes all other factors like focus persevere, determination etc. There is an old saying that “whe4re there’s a will there is a way”. Meanwhile, fears is easy to come by because it is always ready to convince with a norm called “status quo” But to develop the will requires a lot of energy within, combining all factors that define human existence: physical, spiritual, mental and psychological.  What I’ve learned over a period of time is that all these factors work hand in hand. The right application depends on different individuals. Success is real in its real sense.
